Hello loves!

My hiatus from posting around here has been quite long, I know! But I am seriously struggling to set time aside to create content. My new role as a mom of #2under2 has been rather exhausting. But don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my little munchkins very much and I wouldn’t trade being their mom for anything.

Now, let’s get to the itty gritty of how my baby girl, Mila, slept through the night at 2 months old.

Some background info

I first used Taking Cara Babies sleep program with Julian when he was 4 months old. I came across it when my dear friend Nany from @nany and Lore from @thedailybella recommended it. Because I had great results with Julian, I decided to purchase the Newborn program for Mila. As FYI, Taking Cara Babies offers 3 different programs catered to your baby’s age. The breakdown goes like this, Newborn Class, 3-4 Months e-Book and 5-24 Months Class.

Hola amores

Here is what I’ve learned and used from the Newborn Class.

Things You’ll Need

  • Sound machine (for both naps and night-time sleep): Did you know that it is loud as a vacuum cleaner 24/7 inside the womb? This is the one we use.
  • Black-out curtains or shades.
  • Swaddle with Velcro or zippers. We have this one for night-time (but the sound of the Velcro startles Mila sometimes) and this one for naps.

Wake Windows

This translate to how much time your little one should be awake between naps. For newborns it is recommended a time frame of 60-90 minutes. This of course, changes as your baby grows. If you’d like to know more about wake windows, click here to read Cara’s Instagram post that provides recommended wake windows from newborns to 2-year-olds.

Feeding Schedule

Cara recommends feeding on demand for the first 4 weeks of the baby’s life, afterwards you should shoot for 2.5-3 hrs. between feedings. As a rule of thumb, after 4 weeks babies can stretch their night feedings according to their age. For example, 4 weeks old = 4 hour stretch between feedings, 5 weeks old = 5 hour stretch, and so on. Please consult with your pediatrician before purposely stretching the night feedings

Consistent Bedtime

An ideal bedtime for newborns is between 7-8 pm. Create a routine that signals your baby that is time to sleep. A routine could be like this, bath, put on pajamas, feed, read a book, turn on sound machine and place baby in bed.

[/one_half][one_half_last]

Dream Feed

This is when you wake up your baby to offer one more feeding before you (or caregiver) go to sleep at night. The dream feed should be offered between 9:30-11:30 pm with as little stimulation as possible (keep lights off, leave sound machine on, little eye contact). Time this feed 2.5-3 hrs. after the last feeding. Read more about dream feeds in Cara’s blog post here.

Sleep Routines

A nap routine is just as important as a bedtime routine. Believe it or not, babies can recognize repetition and a consistent routine signals them it’s time for bed (or nap). Nap-time routine can be as simple as: changing diaper, put on swaddle, turn on sound machine, sing lullaby and place in bed. By the way, don’t stress about the length of a nap because naps become consistent and regular at about 5 months. Nonetheless, offer it and if baby only sleeps for 30 minutes it’s fine. Just make sure to offer the next nap after the appropriate wake window. Read more about short naps and newborns here.

Stretch Each Week

As mentioned above under “Feeding Schedule”, each week try to get an hour longer in your baby’s night sleep. So, at 4 weeks, we want one 4-hour stretch from feeding to feeding. At 5 weeks, we want one 5-hour stretch and so on. Remember to consult with your pediatrician before you purposely stretch between night feedings.

Wait For Baby to Truly Wake Up

Before intervening in the night, allow baby to fully cry. He or she may just be ‘stirring’. If you respond right away, you will actually awaken him/her and train him/her to awaken in the night. But what are you to do when a cry is in full swing?

To calm your little one when he/she is fussy here (and in the following video) is the amazing 5 S’s technique from Dr. Harvey Karp, author of The Happiest Baby on the Block.

[/one_half][one_half_last]

The Happiest Baby on the Block.

Falling Asleep Independently

We all (adults, children and infants) go through sleep cycles. We wake up several times a night and manage, unknowingly, to fall back asleep; however, babies haven’t learned this skill yet. And ladies, this is your goal, to teach your babies how to fall asleep independently. Why is this so important? Because when they wake up during the night, they will learn how to fall back asleep without your help. Here’s how to achieve this; don’t create habits that require baby to be fed or rocked to sleep. Don’t respond immediately when you hear your baby stir, wait for a full cry. At least twice a day, lay baby down awake for naps.

Our Current Schedule

  • at 3 months old (keep in mind this is an ideal schedule and we don’t follow it 100% but we strive to)

Time Action Notes

9:30 am       Feed  2.5 hours from last feed
10:15 – 11 am Nap #2  1.5 hours from when nap #1 finished & lasts 45 mins.
12:00 noon  Feed 2.5 hours from last feed

Quedarse Dormido Independientemente
