Now that the world cup is way past us and the hardcore fans (are you one of them?) have come to terms with the winner, it’s time that I share my travel guides to Russia. And believe it or not, Russia is definitely a little gem I would recommend everyone to add to their bucket list.

For our first stop, we made our way to the imperial city of St. Petersburg, also known as the Venice of the north.  By the way, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its rich history.

Ahora que la Copa Mundial esta atrás y lo fans entusiasmados (¿será que eres uno de ellos?) han aceptado el ganador, es hora de que comparta mis guías turísticas de nuestro viaje a Rusia. Créanlo o no, Rusia definitivamente es una pequeña joya que recomendaría a todos que agreguen a su lista.

Para nuestra primera parada, nos dirigimos a la ciudad imperial de San Petersburgo, también conocida como la Venecia del norte. Por cierto, está catalogado como un sitio del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO por su rica historia.

Visa [IMPORTANT!]

Residents of most countries need a visa to visit Russia. We have American passports and we had to get a visa in advance, but please double check if you need one. The only exception is if you are arriving by sea (cruise ship or ferry) and staying less than 72 hours. But in order for this, you must book a tour through a locally-based company or directly with the cruise line.

You can apply for a visa yourself, but I wouldn’t recommend it. We opted for a third-party visa agency which took care of everything for us. The main reason why we chose this option was because you need to submit an invitation letter along with your application, otherwise it will not be accepted. This letter needs to be an official document from a Russian organization. In plain English, a letter from a hotel or tour operator.

There are a few third-party visa agencies, we used VisaCentral but I have heard great things about Passport Visas Express. The costs can vary from agency to agency, but the Russian embassy’s fixed priced for processing a visa is $123.

 

When to go

We visited in late April and it was cold! A bit too cold for our taste to be honest. The average temperature was about 50F but I recommend checking holiday-weather.com if weather is a deal breaker for you. If you prefer sunnier days, I read June through August is a great time to visit. If you visit during July, you will be able to experience the natural phenomenon called “white nights” where there is daylight throughout the entire day.

Visa [¡IMPORTANTE!]

Los residentes de la mayoría de los países necesitan una visa para visitar Rusia. Nosotros tenemos pasaportes estadounidenses y tuvimos que obtener una visa por adelantado, pero por favor hagan clic aquí para confirmar que la necesitan. La única excepción es si llega por mar (crucero o ferry) y se quedan Rusia por menos de 72 horas. Pero para ello, debe reservar una excursión a través de una compañía local o directamente con la línea de cruceros.

 Puede solicitar una visa ustedes mismos, pero yo no lo recomendaría. Optamos por una agencia de visas que se encargó de todo por nosotros. La razón principal por la que elegimos esta opción fue porque deben enviar una carta de invitación junto con su solicitud; de lo contrario, su visa no será aceptada. Esta carta debe ser un documento oficial de una organización rusa. En lenguaje sencillo, una carta de un hotel u operador turístico.

Hay varias agencias de visas, nosotros utilizamos VisaCentral pero he escuchado cosas excelentes sobre Passport Visas Express. Los costos pueden variar de una agencia a otra, pero el precio fijo de la embajada de Rusia por procesar tu visa es de $123.

 

Cuando ir

Visitamos a finales de abril y para nosotros hacía mucho frío. La temperatura promedio fue de aproximadamente 50F pero les recomiendo que consulten holiday-weather.com si el clima es un factor decisivo para ustedes. Si prefieren los días más soleados, he leído que de junio a agosto es un buen momento para visitar. Si visitas durante el mes de julio, podrás experimentar el fenómeno natural llamado “noches blancas” donde hay luz natural durante todo el día.

How many days do you need

We visited 4 days/5 nights and we were able visit all the places we wanted. However, if you prefer a more leisure itinerary, I recommend staying more days.

 

How to get there

We arrived to Pulkovo airport. The immigration process was smooth and relatively fast. Please make sure to get your Russian visa before arriving (read VISA tips above). There are three ways to get to the city from the airport.
By bus: City buses 39 and 399 (express) run between the airport and “Moskovskaya” metro station from 5:30 a.m. to 01:20 a.m., the ride is 30 min. without traffic (20 min. for express) and the tickets is just 40 RUB.

By fixed-route minivan taxi: (“marshrutka” in Russian) minivan K-39 will get you to the same metro station (“Moskovskaya”) for the same price just a bit faster –15 mins. if there is no traffic. Note that it works only until 11:30 p.m. 

By taxi: taxi price to the city center should be about 600 -700 RUB if you get it through one of these apps: Yandex Taxi or Gettaxi. You can also get your taxi from a taxi stand, but it is much more expensive, multiply the mentioned price by 2.

¿Cuántos días necesitas?

Visitamos St. Petersburgo por 4 días/ 5 noches y pudimos visitar todos los lugares que queríamos. Sin embargo, si prefieren un itinerario más de tranquilo, le recomiendo quedarse más días.

 

Cómo llegar

Llegamos al aeropuerto de Pulkovo. El proceso de inmigración fue fluido y relativamente rápido. Asegúrese de obtener su visa de Rusia antes de llegar (lea los consejos anteriores). Hay tres formas de llegar a la ciudad desde el aeropuerto.

En autobús: los autobuses urbanos 39 y 399 (express) se encuentran entre el aeropuerto y la estación de metro “Moskovskaya” de 5:30 a.m. a 1:20 a.m., el trayecto dura 30 minutos sin tráfico (20 minutos con express) y el costo es de 40 RUB.

Money

The Russian currency is the ruble. When we visited it was ‎65 RUB per dollar; thus, your dollars or euros will go a long way. Credit cards are well accepted in Russia, preferably Visa or Mastercard.

 

Where to eat

Our experience with the Russian cuisine was not the most extensive one, but we did visit an incredible restaurant with the most trendy and eclectic atmosphere called Terrassa. It is a bit on the pricier side, but ohhhh so worth it!

 

Where to stay

The best area to stay in is near or in the Nevsky Prospect.  There is an abundance of hotels of all price ranges in streets like Bolshaya Konyushennaya, Bolshaya Morskaya and Malaya Morskaya. As a rule of thumb, try opting for a hotel that is within walking distance to the metro. This will only facilitate your commute to the attractions.

Dinero

La moneda rusa es el rublo. Cuando visitamos fue 65 RUB por cada dólar. Las tarjetas de crédito son bien aceptadas en Rusia, preferiblemente Visa o Mastercard.

 

Dónde comer

Nuestra experiencia con la cocina rusa no fue la más extensa, pero visitamos un increíble restaurante con un ambiente súper moderno y ecléctico llamado Terrassa. Es un poco caro, pero vale la pena.

 

Donde hospedarse

La mejor zona para alojarse es cerca o en el Nevsky Prospect. Hay una gran cantidad de hoteles de todos los rangos de precios en calles como Bolshaya Konyushennaya, Bolshaya Morskaya y Malaya Morskaya. Como regla general, trate de alojarse por un hotel que se encuentre a poca distancia del metro. Esto les facilitará su viaje a las atracciones.

What to do

There is so much to visit in St. Petersburg, so here are a few that made it to my top list. As usual, I recommend you download my favorite travel apps Sygit Travel. It is free and one of the best travel guide apps I’ve used (and I have tried many).  You can create daily itineraries from their endless list of sights, tours, hotels, restaurants and more. I love that you can also download offline city maps, so you’ll never get lost even without internet access.

 

1. HERMITAGE MUSEUM: also known as the Winter Palace, and can easily compete with the all-time famous Louvre because of the amount of masterpieces housed inside. This museum used to be the ex-Royal Palace of Russian Tsars so you will be awed with the luxury you will see inside.
2. THE PALACE SQUARE: located right in front of The Hermitage museum. It is a huge square, in fact larger than the Red Square in Moscow, with a 500-ton granite column (the tallest of its kind in the world) in its center.
3. KAZAN CATHEDRAL: it has been coined the ‘Vatican’s little brother’, if you visit you’ll see why. Located on the Nevsky prospect, and on a main street that I strongly recommend strolling by. The entrance is free of charge.
4. ISAAC’S CATHEDRAL: it is now a museum and opened until 4 a.m. during the white nights in the summer. The entrance fee varies depending on the time of day but on average it is 600 RUB  
5. CHURCH OF THE SAVIOR ON BLOOD (Church on Spilled Blood): this is one of the most impressive churches I have visited. I recommend opting for a tour to get to know it’s interesting history. The entrance is free of charge.
6. PETER AND PAUL FORTRESS: This fortress was built by Peter the Great in 1703. Later, it was used as a prison and execution ground for Bolsheviks. From 1954 until now, it has been a museum called State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. You can walk around on the island or visit one of the many museums including the emperor’s tomb located in the Petropavlosvkiy Cathedral. Admission to the fortress is free, but you have to pay to get into museums.
7. PETERGOF: Petergof(or Petrodvorets) is one of the most impressive imperial palace gardens I have visited. Known for its beautiful fountains and for its obvious similarities to Versailles in France This is another site where I recommended hiring a tour guide or opting for a group tour. The best time to visit is summer, but the park opens from May to early October.

Hay tanto para visitar en San Petersburgo, así que aquí hay algunos lugares de interés que fueron parte de mi lista. Me encanta que también pueden descargar mapas de ciudades para cuando no tenga acceso al internet.

 

1. MUSEO HERMITAGE: también conocido como el Palacio de Invierno, y puede competir fácilmente con el famoso Louvre debido a la cantidad de obras maestras que alberga. Este museo solía ser el ex palacio real de los zares rusos, así que le sorprenderá el lujo que verán en su interior.
2. LA PLAZA DEL PALACIO: ubicada justo en frente del Museo Hermitage. Es una gran plaza, de hecho, más grande que la Plaza Roja en Moscú, con una columna de granito de 500 toneladas (la más alta de su tipo en el mundo) en el centro.
3. LA CATEDRAL DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE KAZÁN: ha sido acuñado como el “hermano pequeño del Vaticano”, si visitan verán por qué. Situada en Nevsky Prospect, y en una calle principal que recomiendo pasear. La entrada es gratis.
4. CATEDRAL DE SAN ISAAC: ahora es un museo y durante las noches blancas del verano abre hasta las 4 a. m. El costo de entrada varía según la hora del día, pero en promedio es de 600 RUB.
5. LA IGLESIA DEL CRISTO SALVADOR DE LA SANGRE DERRAMADA: esta es una de las iglesias más impresionantes que he visitado. Recomiendo optar por un recorrido con guía para conocer su interesante historia. La entrada es gratis.
6. LA FORTALEZA DE PEDRO Y PABLO: Esta fortaleza fue construida por Pedro el Grande en 1703. Más tarde, fue utilizada como prisión y campo de ejecución para los bolcheviques. Desde 1954 hasta ahora, ha sido un museo llamado Museo Estatal de Historia de San Petersburgo. Pueden pasear por la isla o visitar uno de los muchos museos, incluyendo la tumba del emperador ubicada en la catedral de Petropavlosvkiy. La entrada a la fortaleza es gratuita, pero deben pagar para ingresar a los museos.
7. PETERGOF: es uno de los jardines imperiales más impresionantes que he visitado. Conocido por sus hermosas fuentes y por sus similitudes obvias con Versalles en Francia. Este es otro sitio donde recomiendo contratar a un guía turístico u optar por una visita en grupo. El mejor momento para visitar es el verano, pero el parque abre de mayo a principios de octubre.

Getting around

By taxi: quite cheap if you use their app Yandex Taxi or Gettaxi; the normal fare would be 33 RUB (per km).

By Uber: what we used the most. It is usually cheaper than a normal taxi, but we had several instances when the app estimated a time of arrival of 5 minutes, it would then prompt us to close to 30 mins. (which was always the accurate time of the driver’s arrival).

By Metro: the metro stations in both Moscow and St. Petersburg are absolutely beautiful! We organized our own excursion where we spent nearly 4 hours riding from station to station getting to know the most beautiful ones. Download this app on your phone to assist you in calculating the fastest route. The cost is 1 ride for 45 RUB

 

Wi-Fi/Internet

There was a lack of Wi-Fi service throughout the city compared to other metropolitan destinations I have visited.  Not all restaurants or museums will offer wi-fi, so be ready to either purchase a SIMS card or an international plan with your cell phone service provider. PS: keep in mind that a lot of websites are blocked from visiting.

 

Language

We didn’t have a problem per say speaking English, but there were a few times when we couldn’t communicate clearly with our Uber driver (for example). However, in highly tourist areas, like shopping malls and museums, almost everyone spoke enough English.

Transportación

Por taxis: bastante barato si usan sus apps: Yandex Taxi o Gettaxi; la tarifa normal es de 33 RUB (por km).

Por Uber: lo que usamos más. Por lo general, es más económico que un taxi, pero tuvimos varios casos en los que la aplicación calculó un tiempo de llegada de 5 minutos, y luego nos indicaba cerca de 30 minutos (cual siempre fue la hora exacta de la llegada del conductor).

En metro: las estaciones de metro en Moscú y San Petersburgo son absolutamente hermosas. Organizamos nuestra propia excursión donde pasamos casi 4 horas yendo de estación en estación para conocer las más bellas. Descarguen esta aplicación en su teléfono para ayudarlos a calcular la ruta más rápida. El costo es de 45 RUB por 1 viaje.

 

Wi-Fi / Internet

Hubo falta de servicio Wi-Fi en toda la ciudad en comparación con otros destinos metropolitanos que he visitado. No todos los restaurantes o museos ofrecerán conexión wi-fi, así que estén listos para comprar una tarjeta SIMS o un plan internacional con su proveedor de servicios de telefonía celular. PD: tengan en cuenta que muchos sitios web están bloqueados de visitar.

 

Idioma

No tuvimos problemas al comunicarnos en ingles, pero hubo algunas ocasiones en las que no pudimos comunicarnos claramente con nuestro conductor de Uber (por ejemplo). Sin embargo, en áreas altamente turísticas, como centros comerciales y museos, casi todos hablaban suficiente inglés.
